We are proud to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, with over 70% of our team being professionals of color. Additionally, we actively recruit individuals who have been participants in our programs, creating a pathway for those who have experienced the transformative impact of our mission. We do more than promote cultural sensitivity; we provide continuous learning opportunities for our staff to deepen their understanding of the diverse communities we support. This ensures that we remain dedicated allies to children, families, service partners, and each other, as we strive to create lasting, systemic change.

- Families United was the recipient of the 2023 Bette Hamilton Outstanding Advocacy Award for our tireless work supporting families and addressing disparities in services.
- Our founder and Executive Director, Dominique Mellion, has over 20 years of experience in developmental disabilities and healthcare advocacy and has been honored to be inducted into the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame and received a Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Eric Swalwell for her groundbreaking work.
- Since our founding, we have helped hundreds of families connect with essential services, advocated for fair policies, and provided invaluable resources to marginalized and underserved communities.

Our Story
Families United was born out of a vision to create a more equitable, inclusive, and supportive world for families navigating the complexities of developmental disabilities. Our journey began with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and their families, particularly those from underserved and marginalized communities. We recognized that these families needed a trusted partner—one that could guide, empower, and advocate for them through every step of their journey.
Our founders, dedicated advocates and leaders in the field, knew firsthand the gaps in resources and support for families of color. They created Families United to bridge these gaps and ensure that all families, regardless of background, have access to the tools, knowledge, and services they need to thrive.
Building a Movement for Change
What started as a small grassroots effort has grown into a powerful movement for change. From our early days, we have been driven by a simple yet profound mission: to uplift marginalized communities, foster access to resources, and break down barriers that prevent equitable service delivery.
Our strong ties to the community are what set us apart. From local neighborhoods to state and federal leaders, we have built lasting relationships that enable us to create impactful change on multiple levels. Our family navigators, some of whom are parents that have graduated from our innovative Navigators to Leaders Program, bring lived experience and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by families. This personal connection fuels our passion and commitment to providing culturally responsive services.
